Do I Need to Register?
Each organization in the Fair Trade supply chain, from the producer until the point of packaging, is audited and submits reports so that TransFair Canada can assure consumers that products carrying the Fair Trade Certified Mark have been produced and traded according to Fair Trade standards.
Activities that require registration
Companies must register with TransFair Canada when their activities include any of the following:
- Paying the Fair Trade minimum price and premium directly to producers
- Importing unfinished Fair Trade Certified goods from the country of origin
- Buying or selling unfinished Fair Trade Certified goods
- Selling bulk unfinished FTC products to other companies
- Processing or manufacturing a Fair Trade Certified product
- Packaging or preparing a FTC product for the end consumer
- Applying the Fair Trade Certified Mark to a product (also ask permission to use the FTC Mark on promotional materials)
- Selling a finished, consumer-ready FTC product under their own brand
No need to Register
You DO NOT need to register if you:
- Simply plan to carry Fair Trade Certified products (that aren't carrying your own brand) in your retail store(s)
- If you are a distributor or wholesaler of Fair Trade Certified consumer-ready products
- If you are transporting or storing Fair Trade Certified products that belong to another company
